What procedures is the TCF IRN for?

The TCF IRN is intended for people who need to officially prove their level of French for an integration, residence or nationality procedure in France.

Before taking your TCF IRN, make sure you check the required level for your administrative situation.

Multi-year residence permit

The TCF IRN can be used to prove the expected A2 level for certain residence-related procedures in France.

The TCF IRN can be used to prove the B1 level now required for a resident card application.

French naturalisation

The TCF IRN is a recognised certification used to prove your level as part of a naturalisation application.

The 4 compulsory TCF IRN tests

The TCF IRN includes 4 compulsory tests, with a total duration of 1 hour 35 minutes.

The TCF IRN assesses general French.
It does not cover French history, culture or institutions, unlike the French Civic Exam, which may be required for the same procedures.

Listening comprehension 20 min Collective test 25 multiple-choice questions, with 4 possible answers and only one correct answer.
Each audio document is played only once. The question is asked after listening to the recording.
Reading comprehension 35 min Collective test 25 multiple-choice questions, with 4 possible answers and only one correct answer.
This test assesses your ability to understand different types of written texts.
Written expression 30 min Collective test 3 written exercises to assess your ability to write in French in simple and concrete communication situations.
Oral expression 10 min Individual test 3 oral exercises with an examiner.
This test assesses your ability to express yourself clearly, answer questions and interact in French.

What you need to know before your session

Before the exam

You will receive a confirmation email, your exam notice, with the exact details.

Check the centre address, appointment time and documents to bring.

Bring a valid identity document: ID card, passport or residence permit.

On the day of the exam

Arrive at the time indicated on your exam notice. No late arrival is accepted after the exam has started.

Computer-based test according to the supervisor’s instructions. Phones must be switched off and left with your bag in the room provided for this purpose.

After the session

Your results are available between 10 days and 3 weeks. The tests are double-marked by France Éducation International in Paris.

Your centre can provide you with a provisional certificate to support your administrative procedures while waiting for the final certificate.

Once your results have been received, your final certificate, valid for 2 years, is available at your centre.

If you do not pass, you can retake the TCF 30 days after your last session.

What is the TCF IRN?
The TCF IRN is the Test de Connaissance du Français – Integration, Residence and Nationality. It is intended for foreign nationals over the age of 16 who need to officially prove their level of French as part of an administrative procedure in France.
The TCF IRN can be used for a multi-year residence permit application, a resident card application, a French naturalisation application, or to validate an A1 level as part of the OFII civic pathway.
The levels indicated by France Éducation International are now as follows: A2 for the multi-year residence permit, B1 for the resident card and B2 for naturalisation.
The TCF IRN includes 4 compulsory tests: listening comprehension, reading comprehension, written expression and oral expression.

The total duration of the TCF IRN is 1 hour 35 minutes. However, you should allow half a day for both the written and oral tests.

No. The TCF IRN only assesses language skills in French. It does not test knowledge of French history, culture or society. It is different from the French Civic Exam, which is part of the same pathway.
The TCF IRN certificate is valid for 2 years from the test date. If you want a diploma valid for life, choose the DELF.
Yes. Since 12 May 2025, the TCF IRN has changed to allow assessment up to B2 level and to adapt to the new administrative requirements in France.
